Buddy Walk

Enjoying the Small Things is a blog that I check every day.  Kelle Hampton has a beautiful outlook on life, takes photos that are just as beautiful and has two great little kids.  I started reading the blog thanks to the wonders of social networking because her birth story about the day Nella was born is truly amazing.  Ever since then, I’ve been a dedicated follower.  Nella has Down Syndrome, I didn’t really know much about it until reading this blog.  She hasn’t let it get to her.

Last year while I was working at the mall for Christmas, one of my supervisors was pregnant.  Derek was born almost 2 months early and as it turns out he also has Down Syndrome.  They didn’t know before hand either.  Most weekends, I’m working unless I request off a few weeks ahead of time.  Well, we all know, I’m not currently working so we packed up the kids and headed to the Binghamton Zoo for the annual Buddy Walk.

We got our t-shirts and hung around with some pigs, goats, a rabbit (named Chewy Lewis HA!) and a rooster. We listened to music and waited (impatiently if you are a 4 year old) for the walk to begin.

Derek is almost a year old now! He’s doing great! Ended up sleeping through much of the zoo.

Once we were in the zoo, the girls took off! Zia kept up with the crowd.

It seemed as if most of the people didn’t even head up the little hill past the crows and into the wolf building. You should see the reindeer’s racks! They are gorgeous right now. A few more weeks and they’ll be perfect! My girl’s have great racks too!!  (get your mind out of the gutter, that’s not what I meant!)

One of our all time favorites at the zoo is of course the road runner!

I have always loved trying to get great pictures at the bear exhibit. While this one is not one of them, I did score some awesome bear photos! She is a gorgeous female!

I was really looking forward to seeing the baby wallaby. It wasn’t my lucky day today. All I got was a foot. The girls were getting antsy though so we moved on. I would love to have tried again later for a spot on that little lady/gent.

When I was an intern at the Buffalo Zoo working in the bird department, I was miserable. I hated working with the birds. I hated working in the confines of little cages and crouching etc. I hated it. I was also attacked by a Lady Ross Turaco that scarred me for a long time. I later learned to adore the bird section and even learned a ton working with them. The Binghamton Zoo has a few now and I caught this beauty!

Only took 5 shots to get a good one!

At the bottom of the hill, we got our medals and some grub! It was great to get out of the house and support a great cause for Derek and Nella!

(maybe I can get the zoo to “watch” the girls for a few hours so I can get a break?)
