It’s Father’s Day and all I got was this lousy cake!

Yup, the perfect occasion to bake a monster cake! Happy Father’s Day Jimmy!!

I’m getting better at it. Especially when the recipe calls for chocolate, pretzels and chocolate milk!

Here’s what we were looking for. Something along these lines. Yes, ladies and gentleman, that’s CAKE!!

I got the idea from Women’s World. I love that magazine. I really should get a subscription…

Anyways, these “hot dogs” are pretzels wrapped in colored fondant. I think now that I know what I’m doing with the fondant, I should stick to it. I added mint extract and oh, it’s so yummy!

Hamburgs are chocolate chip cookies from Wegmans. The recipe called for oatmeal, but I vetoed that and went with the chippers. I colored some more marshmallow fondant, flavored with mint, to look like pieces of cheese. I’m pretty impressed with the colors!!

The legs of the “grill”, more pretzels, covered with mint flavored marshmallow fondant. Can you tell I’m loving this recipe??

The coals were brown, orange and red M&Ms. I wish we had more brown ones, but it’s ok. It worked out ok afterall.

The recipe was huge, a box of yellow cake and a box of pound cake mix and chocolate milk, eggs and some butter. It tastes really good but there’s so much cake here. What was I thinking?

Oh yea, we love cake. I had some problems with the frosting. I think I’m going to stick with the fondant and the more I work with it, the better I’ll get at it. The “red” coloring isn’t vibrant enough and when it’s gone, I’m going out and buying the bright red gel. The liquid makes everything pink no matter how many “drops” I add. Sorry Jimmy, your Father’s Day grill cake was pink. (snickers)

Since there was so much cake to be had, I made a large rectangle cake and had to cut it in half because I don’t have a cake pan large enough to house that much cake. I colored the square green to look like the grass and it actually worked out perfect. The height was amazing and the just right for the pretzel legs to hold it all up.

(please, ignore the toothpicks holding up the grill handles. It was sliding and I didn’t want to lose it. Not everything on Duff’s cake is edible!)

As soon as I started to frost the “grill” and the “grass” it all started to crumble. Then it mixed with the chocolate cake and gave it that “dirty” feel to it. So all in all, it was a win!

PS… we also got him a new grill brush, a new veggie basket which he says will be perfect for speidies and we treated him to Red Lobster for dinner tonight. He didn’t “only” get that lousy cake. =)

Happy Father’s Day Jimmy! Me and the girls love you very much!
