Tree trimmin’

There’s a 78 acre farm in Endicott full of christmas trees. Really! I love going every year, we’ve done it since Jimmy and I moved in together. More fun to go look for it, except when it’s raining. At least it wasn’t windy and cold along with the rain. It really doesn’t take long at all to find the perfect tree.

As soon as I get out of the car, I have National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation going through my head.

“She’ll see it later, Clark. Her eyes are frozen.” “Lotta sap in here. Looks great in here. Little full.” There are so many great quotes in that movie. Seriously, I laugh A LOT when we watch this movie.

As we were decorating our tree, we had the movie on in the background. Today, Sonyea and I were looking at the tree and she said “there’s no squirrel in there, right Mommy?” HA!

The girls really wanted a ride on a sleds.  Not in the rain.  Sorry sweeties.  Sonyea told me where to pull over and we walked for a few short minutes before deciding on one.  Every year, I think about actually taking our time to hunt for a tree but there are so many perfect ones there it doesn’t take long at all.  The price is totally worth it too.

I would have taken more pictures but really, the rain was coming down pretty good that I didn’t want my camera wetter than it already was just to take that one picture. We also tried to knock Zia unconscious. She had no idea what to do when she heard “TIMBER” and it’s a good thing I was paying attention. The tree landed directly on her head as it fell over but I caught most of it before it nailed her into the ground.

Our tree is full of a lot of ornaments that really have memories attached to them. My mom has been buying one ornament a year for as long as I can remember. I also have a bunch that I bought myself and there’s also a bunch from when I was a kid.

I made this lovely bird out of paper mache in 1982.

Jingle bells in 1977. I was 4. They are made out of dixie cups covered in foil with a long piece of yarn attaching the two. What a great craft for little kids!!

Sonyea made this tree when she was 2 at gymnastics.

Sonyea’s 3 middle fingers dipped in paint and made snowmen. She brought this home from Head Start last year.

That’s the look of wonder when she sees the Griswold house decorated for the first time! Did you know that movie has a lot of bad words in it? Yea, not really totally kid friendly but boy oh boy… I love that movie!!

For the longest time, the tree was very heavy on the bottom. Full of ornaments where only a two year old and a four year old could reach. They had to be reminded multiple times to “spread them out, please.”

We brought down the step ladder to get the star on the top and Sonyea decided that was the way to go!

Jimmy was in charge of unwrapping the ornaments and handing them out to the girls. My job was to take photos and drink in the memories. They really did a good job of filling in the holes and made it perfect for 2011!

I noticed we are missing a few precious characters from the tree. That will be our mission this year. Find Belle, the Beast, Jasmine and Aurora. I didn’t realize we didn’t have them.

I love this glass ball. Got it when I was volunteering with the dolphins.

I did hang a few. The most fragile of them all, up top!

We had a few casualties as well. Football Santa’s hand fell off. Woody’s leg fell off… all will be fixed and placed back on the tree before going back in the box for next year.

We have a bunch of these hand painted ornaments from last year too. A few were labeled, most were not. Boy, I certainly dropped the ball on that one!!!

This little cutie, posing and saying “HO HO HO” It’s certainly looking a lot like Christmas around here. The temperatures outside are finally dropping and I’m totally getting in the holiday spirit. If only the people I serve would stop ruining it!!
