Day after the flood

When we woke up this morning, the entire area was covered in thick fog. The sun has since burned that all off and has revealed receding waters. The Governor has said we are not out of the woods yet and in some places the water got higher. In West Corners a retention pond is overflowing and causing more flooding and more evacuation.

We drove up to West Windsor to get gas ($3.85 a gallon) and tried to head to Vestal to Target. Route 17 was backed up because traffic westbound is diverted because of flooding and Exit 6 at Castle Creek is flooded on I-81. I-88 is still closed due to the mudslide. We never made it to Kamikaze Curve. Hit up the Weiss on Robinson Street for the few things we needed and came home. We witnessed most houses with hoses coming out of their basements and had to make a few u-turns trying to find our way back to the highway because Court Street is still under water in many places.

I’m still finding a ton of photos I haven’t seen and many are just very sad to see. The river level apparently never made it to the record level of 2006 BUT the flooding is worse than 2006. The ground was just saturated from all the rain we’ve been getting and then last week when Hurricane Irene came through and dumped a ton more of rain.

Jimmy got up early this morning with the girls and they went for a walk to check out the water. Then after our trip to Binghamton for groceries, we stopped at the bottom of the hill to take more pictures. You can see the difference and how far the water has receded.

Not my picture, found on facebook. This is the fire station up the road.

Not my picture, found on facebook. This is Route 434 in Binghamton on the south side where the speed limit is 55mph. I just thought this was a cool photo. Hopefully there are no cars under that water.
