GRASSROOTS!!! Thursday and Friday

Holy Heat Wave Man!!!! My biggest fear for Grass Roots is always heat/humidity and/or rain. We got the heat and humidity. I decided I wasn’t going to let it bother me or ruin my weekend. And it didn’t. It was difficult, no doubt but it was great fun!

What’s a Mommy to do when your 2 year old has to go potty? There’s no running water, no plumbing, and only porta-potties. We made our own just for the girls. There’s a thing on the market called the Potette. It has made life with two small potty goers MUCH more easy!! We’ve used to on the side of the highways, we’ve used it while at fireworks, we’ve used it at GrassRoots. We’ve used it everywhere. Most places, they pee in the grass but when you are around a lot of people that’s just not the right thing to do so we use the bags. Go potty in the bag and throw it out. Not any worse than a dirty diaper!

Much of the beginning part of Thursday was spent under the shade canopy at the camp site. We could hear music from where we were so it wasn’t a total loss. The girls spent much of the time painting and coloring.

Finally, Jimmy and I started getting antsy sitting around so we decided to load up the wagon (our transportation for the weekend) with our cooler full of ice cold water and headed out to find a little bit of shade near the dance tent.

Two thumbs up from these critics

Set up at the dance tent, in the shade. Ready to start the fun!

With the sunset, we really let loose! The humidity was still up there but the heat was subsiding a little bit. We cracked out the glow bracelets so the girls could be seen in the dark and enjoyed more music.

What is it with kids and poles? Why do all the kids love to run around them? Climb them? Dance with them?

All proud of herself for balancing that bracelet on her arm.

And she crashed hard!

Way past everyone’s bedtime, we headed back to camp. Woke the girls up so they could have a sponge bath, which neither appreciated very much but it was better than sleeping drenched in old sweat. Then they had a hard time falling back to sleep. Needless to say, 2am is WAY past their bedtimes. This is what happens when one certain 4 year old doesn’t get enough sleep…

We had a hard time this weekend with freaking out when she didn’t get what she wanted that very second. We had a hard time with her losing her temper when things didn’t go her way. We are working on nixing this bad behavior now and it’s getting better but it’s slow going.

Back to painting and relaxing after breakfast before heading out for more music.

Friday really starts the festival. Thursday, everyone is setting up camp and getting to know their neighbors and just getting settled. Friday, we headed up to the dance tent (there’s shade up there) and staked our claim to a spot and stayed there all night. Stocked up with more ice cold water and found the spigot for refills (ok, there is “some” running water there) and got ready for more painting.

I learned my lesson a few years ago. We let Sonyea paint fully clothed and she ruined one of my favorite dresses. I couldn’t get the paint out of it. No matter what I did to treat it. So as soon as I noticed that Zia was starting to get messy, I stripped her down.

Since Sonyea got a hula hoop for her birthday, she’s been practicing. She’s dying to figure it out but keeps getting frustrated. She enjoyed watching the pros at the festival.

This is a pro, drink, dance AND hoop!

People are getting creative with their wheels now. This guy had his own traveling bar.

Picking the paint off her feet.

She found the dress up closet!

I’ve found myself taking a picture of the Grass Roots banner every year. Every year it’s the same thing, it never changes. Only the date stamp. I decided this year not to take one. Then we took a bus ride. Sonyea had been begging us since taking the initial bus ride from the parking lot to take another. Ok, fine. Why not? Then I got my idea for the banner picture. Sonyea’s was much better!

that darn pacifier has been made strictly bedtime only! Any time she wants it, she must go up into her bed and leave it up there when she’s done!

Back to the dance floor in the dance tent (still enjoying the shade)

really? Too loud? Not any louder than you and your sister screaming in the car!

More to come in the next here!
